My Good Friend Miguel Rodriguez Essay - 1549 Words
On November 1, 2016, I interviewed my good friend Miguel Rodriguez after eating copious amounts of ââ¬Å"al pastorâ⬠at our favorite Taco truck. I interviewed Miguel because he is a strong individual with solid morals and a community organizer in his hometown of Ventura California. Miguel is 32 years old and is considered a non-traditional student at UCLA, we both graduated in June 2016. I am also considered a non-traditional student except I am right at the minimum of the category. Miguelââ¬â¢s years of hard work as a community organizer make him the ideal candidate for an interview because he delivers a unique perspective on education. Furthermore, his narrative encompasses all six forms of capital outlined in ââ¬Å"Whose Culture has Capitalâ⬠(Yosso 2005). Since Miguel and I are both non-traditional students we both do not fall into the categories established in the Latino educational pipeline (Perez-Huber, et. al. 2015). Sure, we may not have finished college in fo ur years following high school, but we did get those degrees eventually. Furthermore, there is implicit racism in studies like the one conducted by UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC). It implies that Latinos need to be more like Whites and it makes Latinos like Miguel and I, that do not complete college in the ââ¬Å"standardâ⬠four years, to feel ashamed of ourselves. However, I agree with most of the recommendations from that article, it is the statistics that I take offense with which hinders credibility. To secure a better stance amongst the liberals and African Americans, JFK needed to reach out to their communities. So when Martin Luther King Jr. was impris oned in Georgia for attempting to integrate a restaurant, Jack Kennedy called Kingââ¬â¢s wife to offer sympathy and support. This helped him to make a better impression with civil rights activists and African Americans. Lastly, JFKââ¬â¢s debate with Nixon proved him to be a more calm and collected candidate, looking younger and more at ease than the ââ¬Å"abrasiveâ⬠, ââ¬Å"unstatesmanlikeâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"haggardâ⬠Nixon (Dallek, 17-18). Dixon made a point to be inclusive of Kennedyââ¬â¢s personal life by extensively studying his health issues yet untapped by the press. He shared that at two years old, Kennedy was admitted to the hospital with scarlet fever for two months. Economic Equilibrium In Australia Samples â⬠MyAssignmenthelp.com
Question: Discuss about the Economic Equilibrium In Australia. Answer: Introduction From our basic knowledge of economics, we know that economic equilibrium is the state at which demand and supply forces are equal to each other without external impact the price and quantity remain at the equilibrium value. Thus, the quantity demanded is equal to quantity provided with no excess in either supply or demand. The price of commodities in this state is known as the equilibrium price. For there to be equilibrium, the demand for a product at a specific price need to be equal to the related actual supply or the level of production. The aim of this study is to understand the concepts of a stable equilibrium and discuss the state of the Australian economy and whether it is a stable economy. Economic Equilibrium A stable equilibrium in an economy, it is hard to achieve given the difficulty of getting a situation in which goods and services supplied to meet the market demand. Due to excess demands, deficits in supplies, unstable market prices, falling incomes and recessions and expansions in the economy the stability of an economy is not easy to attain. In a stable economy if the rare changes in demand or supply as a result of external factors will lead to a shift in the equilibrium. The changes experienced are to ensure that the equilibrium is maintained as long as the quantity demanded surpasses the one provided. Given that the surplus quantity in the market place is to the extent of AB; the price will take a downward slope. The market will keep feeling the downward pressure until the price encompasses the quantity demanded that must be equal to the level of equilibrium of the quantity supplied. In the case where the quantity demanded surpasses the quantity supplied, the amount of shortage of commodity will be indicated by CE1. The price in the market will take an upward slope as a result of the surplus in demand which means that the price will increase to the level of equilibrium of the quantity supply which must be equivalent to the demanded quantity. A price below that of the equilibrium will cause the quantity supplied to be less than the one demanded. It will result in a decrease in quantity of commodities supplied causing a deficit of the commodity in demand. In the case where the the opposite happens and the price is above that of the equilibrium, the supplied quantity will exceed the one demanded. The additional supply will cause the price to reduce even more, moving it further away from the equilibrium. However, the probability of the price moving near the equilibrium is very minimal. The balanced state of economic equilibrium can be disrupted by external factors, such as a change in consumer preferences. This can result in a decrease in demand and, therefore, it leads to a condition of excess supply in the market. A temporary state of disequilibrium, in this case, will proceed until a new equilibrium is identified (Khan Yannelis, 2013). A nations economy is said to a stable system when it contains only minimal instabilities in output development and displays low inflation continuously. Sustainable, low and stable unemployment and a sustainable balance of payments position must also be present in a stable economic system. These are the four aims that are vital for any country to maintain macroeconomic stability. These are measured by indicators such as GDP growth rate, inflation rate, unemployment rate and balance of payments. A stable economy is often considered to be a profitable state that most developed countries have that is achieved through the implementation of actions taken by their governments. Australia Unstable Economy Equilibrium The main purpose of the policies developed by governments is to increase the level GNI ( gross national income) as well as ensure that there is sufficient economic development and growth to support any rise in utility and standard of living of active drivers of the economy. Another purpose of government policies is to keep prices at a stable level that can only be achieved if there is little to no change in the cost of products. The stability of an economy is greately affected by too much government interventions. Fiscal policies as well as monetary policies are the main tools governmemts use to maintain a stable economy with characteristics such as maximum employment levels, monitored inflation and a fair balance of payments. The economy of Australia is developed and one of the largest mixed market. In Australia, the economy is influenced by various factors that make it impossible of the economy to be stable. The economy of Australia has been incredibly profitable and stable for years now. It has been characterised by structural reforms, a prolonged commodity boom as well as resilient and effective macroeconomics strategy. The economy has remained strong and stable and has not marred by a recession since July 1991 (Mgge Stellinga, 2015, pp. 42-62). Conventional economic signals have shown that Australias economy is superior to that of the majority of developed countries. Despite the higher rate of inflation, the countrys growth and high rate of employment is envied by many countries. Australia is a very wealthy country by world standards and the governments role in the economy has developed wealth and provided opportunities for the people. The worldwide financial crisis that paralysed most of the world did not affect Australia by much as its banking systems and inflation stayed strong and controlled. The productivity of opening up process has been significantly improved, in addition to more restorative growth and adaptable and active economy. Therefore it is highly unlikely for it to be drastically affected by changes in the economy. Australia is among the few advanced economies to avoid a downward influence in its economy (recession), in part because of strong principles at the start of the crisis. Growth sunk for only briefly below trend during the crisis and rebounded quickly. Australian markets have significantly low risk in addition to consistently strong grown in the gross domestic product (GDP), nonvolatile interest rates and considerably superior levels of employment with climbing exchange rates (Hatfield-Dodds et al, 2015). Conclusion It is evident that Australias economy is stable. The economic growth rates of Australia are robust and superior to that of most developed countries including the United Kingdom and the United States. Recent statics shows that Australia has a GDP greater than countries that are considered to be the most industrialised such as Germany, the United Kingdom, and France. The Policies developed by the Australian government have ensured that the countrys economy carries minimal risk, has high employment levels and a robust GDP, climbing foreign exchange rates as well as dependable cash flow rates. Pernicious Anaemia Causes and Curing Procedures
Introduction Pernicious anaemia refers to a form of anaemia, which results from failure of the body to absorb adequately absorb vitamin B-12. Vitamin B-12, being an important nutrient in the body is absorbed in the small intestine from foods rich in vitamin B-12. Lahner and Annibale (2009) explain that vitamin B-12 binds itself to intrinsic factor, a parietal-cells-secreted protein, forming a complex, which is readily absorbed by the small intestine.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Pernicious Anaemia: Causes and Curing Procedures specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Irvine (1965) submits that when the aforementioned intrinsic factor is absent from the body, perhaps because of autoimmunity of genetic issues, vitamin B-12 is reduced in the victimââ¬â¢s body, leading to pernicious anaemia. Further, victims of autoimmune disorders are more exposed to pernicious anaemia because their antibodies attack parietal cells, leading to abnormal secretion of the intrinsic factor, which in turn leads to poor vitamin B-12 absorption and consequently, pernicious anaemia (Toh, Van Driel Gleeson, 1997). Therefore, the pathophysiology and pathogenesis of pernicious anaemia comes from the autoimmune disorder. The pathophysiology and pathogenesis of pernicious anaemia show that occurrence of autoimmune disorder affects secretion of the intrinsic factor leading to mal-absorption of vitamin B-12. Autoantibodies attach themselves to gastric H+/K+ââ¬âATPase that is a pump composed of a 100 a glycoprotein à ²-subunit (60-90 kDa) and a kDa catalytic à ±-subunit, and consequently prevent the proper functioning of parietal cells and intrinsic factor secretion (Toh et al., 1997). This report is an investigative analysis of the pathophysiology and pathogenesis of pernicious anaemia. It analyses the stomachââ¬â¢s morphology in relation to pernicious anaemia, diagnoses pernicious anaemia in sample stomachs through western blot technique, and seeks to detect antibodies in sample serums through immune-histochemistry staining. Aim The objective of this report is to detect antibodies of the proton pump of the stomach by applying immune-histochemistry and western blot techniques on serum samples. To set a good background for the study, the report first analyses the critical components of a healthy stomach.Advertising Looking for report on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! The slides were incubated in xylene for two minutes and further incubated in ethanol for another two minutes. Rinsing was done on the slides for 30 seconds after the slides were incubated in haematoxylin. Staining and washing was done, followed by soaking in 1% acid alcohol and rins ing. The stained slides were placed for 30 seconds in Scottââ¬â¢s tap to incubate, and thereafter, rinsed before staining them with eosin for a period of 4 minutes. The slides were subsequently placed for 30 seconds in 90% and 100% ethanol to fix them. After the fixation, the slides were put on ethanol for 2 minutes and dried in the air immediately. A drop of DPX medium was applied on fixed slide, preparing it for mounting, covered with cover slip, and a magnification of x400 used to view it. Diagrams focussing on the gastric gland and stomach wall were sketched using a pencil on an A4 paper. Procedure for Preparing SDS-PAGE and Western Blot For the stomach specimen, a protein sample of 48à µL was added into a microfuge with 12à µL of SDS-sample. Molecular weight markers for the assessment of the molecular weights were prepared in advance. To sediment the molecular markers and protein sample, the solutions were spun in a centrifuge for a few minutes. Next, lane 1 of the prepare d SDS-PAGE in electrophoresis apparatus was loaded with 10à µL of the molecular weight markers. Just like molecular weight markers, subsequent wells of the SDS-PAGE were loaded with 25à µL of the protein sample. Then the electrophoresis apparatus was started on a power of 200 volts and left for 45 minutes. After electrophoresis was over, the apparatus was switched off and dismantled, and a demonstrator was used to apply gel on a clean plate. Then the gel was placed on the iBlot device with the aim of assessing the separation of proteins according to their weights. 10uL of distilled water was used in the placement of one gel in iBlot device, which processed it for 7 minutes, and another gel was put in nitrocellulose film. The nitrocellulose membrane was stained using 50mL of 0.1% Ponceau solution and leaving it for 1 minute, which ensured that protein transformation had occurred. To detect sera of patients, the nitrocellulose membrane was labelled.Advertising We will write a c ustom report sample on Pernicious Anaemia: Causes and Curing Procedures specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Lanes were cut using a pair of scissors and subsequently rinsed using NaOH with an aim of removing stains. The membrane was washed in 50mL of TBS and stored for the subsequent practical, which would include 10mL of Tris-buffer at 40o C. Deionised water was used to clean membranes after they were retrieved from storage. The wash included the following three steps: blocking step involving 5mL of 5% skimmed milk blocking solution; incubation of primary antibody using 2.5mL of patient serum sample or the positive and the negative control; and secondary antibody incubation using 5mL of labelled antibody. The iBlot was put to use again in performing the aforementioned three steps. Consequently, membrane strips were removed from the device and washed with TBS 3 times for a period of five minutes. Several steps were subsequently performed before imaging using the Chemidoc. The results of the test were then uploaded to CloudDeakin. Procedure of Preparing Immuno-Peroxidase of Mouse Stomach As some steps of slides preparation was done beforehand, Incubation was done for 100à µL of serum for 20 minutes because some slide preparation steps had already been completed. Slides were washed using PBS horseradish peroxide, also known as anti-human Ig HRPO, was used to conjugate 50à µL of antibodies by incubating it for 45 minutes. Slides were then washed in PBS and water was used to rinse them before 100à µL of DAB was added, subsequently incubating them for 10 minutes. Before the slides were soaked in haematoxylin for 3 seconds, they were cleaned using PBS. After the cleaning, they were rinsed with water and incubated in ethanol for an approximate 2 minutes. DPX was applied on slides and they were viewed with a microscope magnification of Ãâ"400. Discussion Discussion: Morphology of the Stomach In order to understand the morphology of the stomach well, the mucosal and sub-mucosal layers of the mouseââ¬â¢s stomach are stained with eosin and haematoxylin as depicted in figure 1. Figure 2 shows gastric gland stained with the same, which together with the other parts are key determinants of the mouseââ¬â¢s stomach morphology.Advertising Looking for report on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More As Irvine (1965) notes, the major feature of pernicious anaemia is the atrophy of mucosal cells for example parietal cells. The latter are responsible for the secretion of gastric acid and intrinsic factor which aid in vitamin B-12 absorption in the end of the small intestine. ââ¬Å"Essentially, parietal cells have the H+/K+-ATPase pump, which consists of beta and alpha subunitsâ⬠(Rhoades Bell 2008). This is well illustrated in figure 2 whereby the parietal cells are pink stained while the other main cells (chief cells) are dark-pink stained. The chief cells play a significant role of pepsinogen secretion, which catabolizes proteins (Toh et al. 1997). In that case, the physiology of parietal cells and protein catabolism is dependent on the stomach morphology. Discussion: Western Blotting The experiment proved that a western blot technique is effective in determining whether patients are infected with pernicious anaemia. Results from the study were presented on CloudDeakin. I t is however important to mention that the western blot technique did not achieve the desired results in all experiments because its results were spurious. Some membranes in the study lacked bands, while some had patchy or uneven spots as shown in figure 3. Defects in antigens, buffers, or antibodies resulted in interference of definite bands in the membranes. Additionally, use of inappropriate antibodies, either primary or secondary, also resulted in vague bands or no bands at all. Likewise, the use of low concentrations of the antibody also results in invisible bands and lack of antigen or low concentrations of the same leads to an invisible signal. In this regard, it is necessary to use different antigens in order to determine whether invisibility is because of primary and/or secondary antibodies or antigens. The visibility of bands can also be affected by procedures like membrane washing. This is because prolonged washing is likely to diminish signal appearance. Contamination of buffers may also lead to invisible bands, hence the need to preserve their purity during the study (Lahner Annibale, 2009). The western blot procedure should be undertaken in such a way that buffers like TBST, ECL and PBS are not contaminated. The procedureââ¬â¢s transfer of protein component is perhaps the most sensitive because it may be interfered by air bubbles and partial transfer can occur (Andres Serraj, 2012). When such improper protein transfer occurs, then the blot comes out with uneven or patchy spots. In the event of trapped air bubbles within the membranes and gel, the output in film will be dark. Therefore, to prevent bubble formation, one should evenly distribute particles by incubating using a shaker. The results presented in figure 4 were prepared by the technical staff. The H+/K+-ATPase antigen is responsible for triggering an autoimmune disorder (Lahner Annibale, 2009), which interferes with the proper functioning of parietal cells and intrinsic-factor secr etion (Lahner Annibale, 2009). The parietal cellsââ¬â¢ autoantibodies act against H+/K+-ATPase, thereby affecting the function of parietal cells, and consequently the occurrence of pernicious anaemia (Andres Serraj, 2012). Structurally, the autoantigen measures an approximate 160 to 190 kDa, with the specific measurement being determined by its constituent protein subunits. The autoantigen is made up of a glycoprotein à ²-subunit (60-90 kDa) and a 100 kDa catalytic à ±-subunit (Toh et al., 1997). The subunits are the ones that determine the nature of the disorder affecting parietal cells and intrinsic factor secretion. The western blot analysis revealed a fragment of approximately 80 kDa. The fragment is a glycosylated à ²- subunit of the H+/K+-ATPase pump because the fragment detected corresponds a 80 kDa molecular marker. In the event of pernicious anaemia, H+/K+-ATPase is the autoantigen that is solely recognizable by parietal-cells antibodies. Therefore, it is vital in d iagnosing pernicious anaemia using western blot (Toh et al., 1997). Evidently, patient 1ââ¬â¢s stained strip in figure 4, indicates a positive diagnosis. The size of the autoantibody-bound subunit is approximately 80 kDa that is a glycosylated à ²-subunit of the H+/K+-ATPase pump. Therefore, the findings from the western blot procedure confirm that the patient is positive, and that the autoantigen subunit is glycosylated à ²- subunit of the H+/K+-ATPase pump. ELISA, which is an acronym for Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, can also be utilized in detecting anti-proton pump antibodies that prove presence of pernicious anaemia in patients. H+/K+-ATPase is the main autoantigen, which is present in pernicious-anaemia patient sera because it induces autoimmune disorder that interferes with parietal cells and thereby inhibits secretion of the intrinsic factor (Lahner Annibale, 2009). When ELISA is used, the autoantigen on the micro titre plate is immobilized, and the serum sample t hat contains anti-proton pump antibodies is combined and incubated with the aforementioned antigen. Serum samples normally have antibodies that are specific to proton pump antigens. This implies that the antibodies bind to the proton pump à ± and à ² subunits. Sugiu et. al. explain that proteins and excess antibodies in serum are cleaned and the secondary antibody that is linked to the enzyme, and which is primary-antibody specific, is also added to the micro titre plate. A change in colouration is achieved by the use of the chromogenic substrate, indicating proton-pump antibodies presence. In order to be able to determine the amount of proton pump antibodies in sera by the use of ELISA, the assessment of electrical signal, intensity of colour and fluorescence is necessary. To measure colour intensity in absorbance of luminance, it is a spectrophotometer can be used (Sugiu et al., 2006). This accurately determines the level of proton pump antibodies in the sera. Therefore, determi nation of fluorescence or colour intensity is an important component of qualifying proton pump antibodies. The anti-human IG-HRP conjugate of the sheep is a secondary antibody, which links with the H+/K+ ATPase antigen indirectly because it uses the primary antibody to link to the antigen. Anti-human Ig-HRP is actually an antibody specific to the human Ig production of the antibody, and it results from the immunological response of a sheep to human Ig (Chevrier, Chateauneuf, Guerin Lemieux, 2004). The anti-human Ig is actually a secondary antibody and thus, immune-histochemistry and in western blot, horseradish is used to conjugate it. Horseradish is an enzyme, which catalyses chromogenic substrates. Discussion: Immuno-peroxidase staining of mouse stomach section In this section of the report, emphasis is put on the stomachââ¬â¢s immune-histology to determine whether the patient mouse tests positive or negative for pernicious anaemia. In case of positive results, the antibodies are seen attached on the proton pumps of the parietal cells (Irvine 1965). During this experiment, unknown patients were applied anti-human 1g to the human 1g, which were labelled P1 and P2. From the experiment results, it was depicted that there were no brown stains thus concluding that there was no antibody-attachment on the proton pumps of the parietal cell. The conclusion was that patient 2 had tested negative for pernicious anaemia. On the other hand, patient 1 tested positive for pernicious anaemia because there were brown stains, which indicated antibody-antigen attachment on the proton pumps of the parietal cells. The Aeneid essays
The Aeneid essays The Aeneid was a literary epic written by Vergil. The Roman people as their national epic quickly accepted the Aeneid. Vergil's greatest influence was Homer. The Aeneid is about the Trojan hero Aeneas traveling to eventually start the Roman Empire. After the fall of Troy, Aeneas sail for Italy where him and his followers will settle and eventually establish a colony that will one day become Rome. While on route a storm drives his ships to the coast of Africa and Carthage. Dido, the queen of Cartage, welcomes Aeneas and his men. Venus, Aeneas' mother seeks to protect him from Juno, the goddess who is determined to thwart Aeneas's mission to get to Italy. Venus tries to stop Juno from using Dido in any scheme to delay Aeneas's quest. So Venus decides that Dido should fall in love with Aeneas. Venus inflames Dido's heart and her love for Aeneas begins to grow. Dido entertains her new guests at a banquet where with food and wine, she becomes more infatuated with Aeneas. Aenea s in a flashback remembers his adventures from the fall of Troy to arriving in Carthage. Dido kills herself because Aeneas left Carthage and rejected her love and pleadings to remain with him in northern Africa. Aeneas journeys through the underworld with the aid of a Sibyl. Along the way, they encounter many of Aeneas's friends and a few enemies. On many occasions, Aeneas and a friend talk about past adventures. As Aeneas wanders through the Underworld, he notices Dido wandering about. He tries to talk to her, but his words serve no purpose; she flees from him. He then sees the souls of those who died in battle. He sees numerous horrible sights like: Grief, Disease, Old Age, Fear, Hunger, and several others. Sibyl explains why the dead souls behave the way the do. After witnessing all he did in the Underworld, Aeneas finally meets his father Anchises. Anchises tells Aeneas what is to come in the near future. Anchises lists the descendants of A...

And when I got there, I discovered that his message said â⬠¦ ready for this? â⬠¦. ââ¬Å"Thanks.â⬠Yep, I had wished John a happy birthday and he was thanking me. That was it. If I had been able to see this message in my email inbox, all would be well. I could have deleted it and someday gotten around to replying to John with a thumbs up ââ¬â or not. But as of about a month ago, LinkedIn is forcing us to go to their website to read our mail. Strangely, I havenââ¬â¢t found anyone talking about this on the interwebs. Am I the only person who doesnââ¬â¢t like this change? I mean, I donââ¬â¢t usually write rants in my weekly blog, but this new messaging functionality is not working for me. Hereââ¬â¢s What I Donââ¬â¢t Like: I have to click on a message and go to LinkedIn without knowing whether I want to read the message. Itââ¬â¢s often a waste of time. Flagging messages for follow-up has become less integrated. I can flag the message in my inbox, but when I want to follow up, I need to go to the LinkedIn platform to remind myself what the conversation was. LinkedIn seems to be pushing people to subscribe to LinkedIn Premium in order to have their messages seen. The thing is, if someone sends me an inMail, I can view the entire message. So Iââ¬â¢m encouraged to send inMails, which are only available through LinkedIn Premium, instead of sending regular messages which canââ¬â¢t be read from peopleââ¬â¢s inboxes. I find myself not wanting to click, not wanting to go to LinkedIn. Since itââ¬â¢s my job, I do it. But what about the people receiving my messages? Will they open them? Iââ¬â¢m afraid fewer and fewer of my non-inMail communications will be read as people get tired of blindly clicking on ââ¬Å"View Message.â⬠LinkedIn didnââ¬â¢t send any notification that I know of to their subscribers letting us know about this change. For a while after the Microsoft merger, communications from LinkedIn seemed to have gotten better. They were announcing changes before they happened! Recently, however, there have been no announcements, no notifications. I donââ¬â¢t like being in the dark, especially as someone whose job it is to advise people about changes in the LinkedIn platform. Take Action Am I alone here? Anyone else who is peeved by this change? Or has the collective LinkedIn community thrown its hands up in the air on this one? In the past, when enough people have complained about a change, LinkedIn has reverted back to the preferred functionality. Perhaps we can change the way our emails are appearing? If youââ¬â¢re behind me, please let LinkedIn (and others) know! Hereââ¬â¢s How to Send Feedback to LinkedIn To send your feedback to LinkedIn, visit LinkedIn Help at https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/solve/feedback and suggest they improve this feature. You could write something like this: Area of Feedback: Message Notifications Your Question: LinkedIn, please change the message notifications back to the way they were. Fire-Resistant Properties of Building Materials Assignment
Fire-Resistant Properties of Building Materials - Assignment Example In addition, a recommendation will be made on the building materials best suited for the construction of a proposed building. Fires generally produce temperatures of approximately 1000C which can seriously affect the structural integrity of a building. Among the effects of fire is the loss of strength of the building material which can result in building collapse. In addition, thermal expansion associated with high temperatures may affect structures that are not directly in the vicinity of the fire. With the exception of timber, all materials used in building construction will begin to lose strength at temperatures exceeding 250C. This effect may be permanent. Metals begin to form droplets beginning at 300-350C. Concrete changes colour to pink at 250-300C. Chemical effects occur at 650C for aluminium and its alloys, and 1100-1200C for copper and iron (Prentice, 1990). Timber is one of the oldest materials used in building construction. The properties of timber are dependent on the type of wood used in construction, and how it has been treated. Wood responds well to tensional and compression forces but can bend due to the fibrous nature of this material. Wood can be a fire resistant material as it is subject to charring, which means that the wood in the centre may be protected during combustion to retain the structural integrity of the building. For the most part, however, timber is rapidly consumed by fire and can enhance the intensity of a fire since the material is subject to combustion. Timber used in building materials can be made more fire-resistant by coating the surface of the timber with fire-resistant chemicals such as ammonium phosphate and soleplate, borax and boric acid (Jones, 1986). Heavy wood timbers may be fire-resistant since the wood burns slowly inward causing charring of the exterior while the inner wood layers remain protected for significant periods of time.Ã Ã Ã

Merging in the UK Package Holiday Market Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 11
Merging in the UK Package Holiday Market - Essay Example Both Cook and MyTravel enjoy an oligopolistic stature in the UK travel market as there are very few big players competing with one another over branded tourism products and services (HighBeam Research 1998). By the time Thomas Cook and MyTravel merged with each other to form the Thomas Cook Group, the trend in the UK travel sector was beginning to change. The concept of franchising was getting popular among giant business houses. As a consolidating approach to this changing scenario, another acquisition was soon on the cards. TUI Travel tied up with First Choice in September 2007, marking a milestone event in the UK travel industry. Following these two mergers, the entire travel sector assumed new looks in terms of operational mobility and packaged marketing initiatives. As the two major players in the global travel hunt, both operators took great care of their respective areas of interest, including hotels, cruises and charter airliners. Moreover, a seamless retail network involving major travel agencies was established to provide a convenient one-stop travel experience for vacationers. This paper is going to analyze in detail these two case studies and probe into a number of strategic issues that set off the mergers. Additionally, the paper will also look into the post-merger economic challenges and how they are going to affect the future of the travel market over the next few years. To address these issues systematically, the paper will answer three questions. 1. Why did Thomas Cook and MyTravel, and TUI and First Choice merge? What benefits have been gained from the mergers? What problems have had to be overcome, and what challenges do they face in the light of the current global economic downturn? The Mediterranean coast has always been the most sought after tourist destination in Europe. Whether it is leisure travel for rejuvenating the mind and the body or high-priority business trips, the Mediterranean destinations provide value for money for the travelers throughout the year.

Poems of Edgar Allan Poe Essay Example for Free
Poems of Edgar Allan Poe Essay A tell-tale heart ââ¬â essay The gradual descent into insanity is a common characteristic of Edgar Allan Poe as an auteur. This being one of Poeââ¬â¢s shortest stories separates itself from his other literature as it draws its focus onto the irony of the stalking, and confession of the murder of an old man. ââ¬ËThe Tell-Tale Heartââ¬â¢ explores the mind of a mentally unstable and delusional individual on his descent to madness. In doing so the short story touches upon the contrasts between the rational and irrational. The ââ¬ËThe Tell-Tale Heartââ¬â¢ presents two physical settings. It is clear from the narratorââ¬â¢s perspective that there is a change of setting. ââ¬Å"Observe how healthily ââ¬â how calmly I can tell you the whole storyâ⬠, the narrator then continues, ââ¬Å"It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brainâ⬠. This passage indicates that the story that is narrated, is told in retrospect. The passage can be interpreted as being the narrator attempting to justify his murder and convince the reader that he is not mad as he can tell the story calmly and sanely. The passage can also be perceived as being directed towards the police officers that are introduced at the end of the story. In doing so the narrator might also try to convince the police officers that his deed was justified and necessary. The theme of insanity is shown through the narrators descend into madness. The narrator states that ââ¬Å"very gradually ââ¬â I made up my mind to take the life of the old manâ⬠which marks the beginning of his descent. It is made clear to the recipient of the story that the narrator believes he is sagacious in his lurking. However, the narration gives the impression that he is a madman. The narrator says ââ¬Å"I undid the lantern cautiously-oh, so cautiously ââ¬â cautiouslyâ⬠and also says ââ¬Å"I kept pushing it on steadily, steadilyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"you cannot imagine how stealthily, stealthilyâ⬠. The narratorââ¬â¢s reiterations present a sort of vocal tic which adds to his characteristic of being mentally unstable and mad. The story explores the contrasts between the rational and irrational. The theme of rationality is shown through the narratorââ¬â¢s attempts to rationalize his actions. The premise of the narratorââ¬â¢s suffocation of the old man is the ââ¬Ëevil eyeââ¬â¢ he has. Whenever the narrator gazes at the ââ¬Å"dull blueâ⬠eye he experiences chills through ââ¬Å"the very marrowâ⬠in his bones. This suggests that the old manââ¬â¢s eye terrifies him. It does, however, seem very unlikely that the old man has an inhuman eye ââ¬Å"no human eye ââ¬â not even hisâ⬠. The rational explanation for the appearance of the eye that the narrator is fixated about, is that the old man is suffering from cataract. The disease bears a close resemblance to the eye of a vulture. This is proven by the narratorââ¬â¢s very similar description of the eyeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"pale blue, with a film over itâ⬠and ââ¬Å"a dull blue, with a hideous veilâ⬠. This can also explain why the old man is never woken up or is disturbed by having the light shone into his ââ¬Å"evil eyeâ⬠. This is because he might be lacking vision in one eye. The narrator attempts to convince the reader that he is cunning and wise when observing the old man in his bed. The narratorââ¬â¢s irrational nature is emphasized in this passage where he very slowly enters the bedroom with only his head and lantern ââ¬Å"It took me an hour to place my whole head within the opening so far that I could see him as he lay upon his bedâ⬠. The use of irony in the short story adds to the narratorââ¬â¢s complete unawareness of his own instability expressed through his lack of rational perception. The narrator contradicts himself implicitly. He states that he ââ¬Å"loved the old manâ⬠and that ââ¬Å"he had never wronged meâ⬠. This implies that he had no quarrels with the old man and therefore had no motivation for murdering him. He then contradicts himself by being excited by the old manââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"uncontrollable terrorâ⬠. The theme of irony is also shown when the narrator hears the old manââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"groan of mortal terrorâ⬠and recognizes the feeling. The narrator ââ¬Å"knew the sound wellâ⬠, he had experienced them himself being ââ¬Å"welled up from my own bosom, deepening, with its dreadful echo, the terrors that distracted meâ⬠. This can be interpreted as the narrator explaining that he suffers from terrors which indicates that he has been or is feeling fear to the marrow of his bones and has experienced something horrific. This is also supported by the symbolism of the narrator burying the old man underneath the floorboards, which can be interpreted as him repressing his emotions and hiding them and then eventually being welled up when he confesses the murder. However, it is vaguely explained and remains a mystery to the readers. This corresponds well with the characteristic of the narrator which is only described implicitly. The narratorââ¬â¢s gender is not revealed. This might be because the gender of the narrator is not important to the story and that Edgar Allan Poe has written the story in such a way that the common reader assumes the gender of the narrator to be male. The most prominent ironic situation is the narratorââ¬â¢s own sagaciousness and over-acuteness that end up being the reasons for his confession to the police officers. His own hypersensitivity betrays him. This also supports his irrationality as he had confirmed the death of the old man when he felt his heart. He is however still convinced that the beating heart belongs to the ââ¬Å"stone deadâ⬠man. This also shows his descent into madness as he perceives the noise as being a ringing in his ears, but then convinces himself that it is ââ¬Å"the beatingâ⬠of the old manââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"hideous heartâ⬠. He contradicts himself in this passage where he has previously described himself as cunning but is unable to correctly identify the source of the beating heart. ââ¬ËThe Tell-Tale Heartââ¬â¢ is a story that largely focuses on the inability of the narrator to judge his own state of sanity. This is further supported by the narrator frequently being deceived by his own senses and even contradicting himself which diminishes his reliability. The topic of repressed emotions and the border between sanity and insanity is addressed by interpreting the narratorââ¬â¢s behavior and actions. This determines that the narrator is indeed a madman.

Essay --
I am certainly in no means becoming a scientist but I do like keeping up with what is happening in the world science wise as well as other things. Iââ¬â¢ve seen how the media and politics have blurred the lines between what information is backed up by evidence and what is not. In Saganââ¬â¢s essay I found that some of his tools to detecting ââ¬Ëbaloneyââ¬â¢ are tools that I see myself use on a day to day basis without thinking or in school when Iââ¬â¢m writing papers that are using logos, pathos, or ethos. I think everyone should try and practice Carl Saganââ¬â¢s tools in baloney detection, as it would benefit you as a person to have substantial information with solid evidence. I agree that it is important to have independent confirmation of the ââ¬Ëfactsââ¬â¢ as Sagan said. I use this method most of the time at work; I work in health care and deal a lot with sending documentation to doctors. I have come across multiple times that a doctorââ¬â¢s office will say they never received a document and when Iââ¬â¢m questioned about it, I always show the confirmation sheet that shows that the fax went through to the doctorââ¬â¢s office. If I only had my word that I sent it, I donââ¬â¢t have the evidence to back up my calm and it becomes a he said she said situation. Another good example having independent confirmation is say youââ¬â¢re having an argument with someone and they are just denouncing the evidence you found from performing a test, look into getting another set of results done from the same test by another person to show that not only have you come up with the same results but another person has also found the same evidence of your claims in their results. Another tool Sagan mentions that I believe is very good to practice is encouraging substantive debates. I donââ¬â¢t kn... ...ts that show that Greece is one of the most seismically active countries in the world. Be it having an argument in politics, science, or simple reasoning; these tools for detecting baloney are very useful and important. You donââ¬â¢t want to be that moron at a party just spewing ignorant nonsense just because it was what you read in a tabloid magazine that states that the world is going to end in the next few days by a massive asteroid hitting the Earth; you also donââ¬â¢t want to be the person caught believing what that moron is saying to be true without having good facts. I donââ¬â¢t always know when I use these tools but I know that how I think most of the time falls along the guidelines of these tools. I rather be properly informed of what I am learning or I rather be persuaded in a different view of something as long as it has substantial evidence to back up its claim.
